What is a font license?

Fonts are not sold as products, but as softwares. Purchasing a font license gives you the right to use it in the specified ways defined in the license agreement. You do not own the font itself, you pay for the right to use it under specific conditions.

How does the pricing work?

The pricing aims 1 ) to simplify access to fonts — avoiding complex use cases that require many different licenses — and 2 ) to sell the fonts at a fair price that really relates to the value it brings to the license owner — differenciating the price between a company with 3 employees from one with 300 employees. Therefore, the pricing is based on two core principles: the client owns the license ( not the designer ) and the price is proportional to the size of the company.

Can I buy fonts on behalf of my client?

No: It is the client who buys the fonts. But, thanks to the share function in the basket, you can prepare the order and send it to your client in order for him to finalise the purchase.

What’s the difference between Proportional and Unlimited Licenses?

A proportional license is related to the client’s company size, which means that the growth of its business must be monitored every year. If the company gets bigger, an upgrade license must be pruchased. An unlimited license implies a flat fee and requires not monitoring ever, even if the business grows over the years. How is the company size calculated?

The best way to explain it is by giving some examples. For big companies and institutions: the company size includes every employees from the direction board to the shareholders to managers and interns of every department. It usually results in a high number, reason why the unlimited licenses model makes more sense in this scenario. On the other hand, the proportional license is designed to reflect the economic growth of the company. For mid-sized companies and institutions: the company size includes every employees from directors to managers to interns, not only the communication department. In case of a self-initiated project for a design studio: the company size includes every employees from designers to admins to interns, etc. In the case of a self-initiated for a single individual: the company size equals one.

When do I need to upgrade my license?

When the business gets bigger and the client’s company hires more employees than the previous year, the license price must be adapted in consequence.

What font formats are available?

For every font: Open Type Font ( OTF ), True Type Font ( TTF ), Web Open Font ( WOFF & WOFF2 )
In some cases: True Type Font Variable Font ( TTF )

How much do variable fonts cost?

Variable fonts are font softwares that incorporate multiple cuts from a font family in a single file, allowing the user to modify the font at will using the different parameters ( axes ) available in the file. Since a variable font includes every cuts of a family and even more, it is therefore equivalent to buying the complete family.

Do you provide printable specimens?

Yes. Thanks to the CSS print technology that converts a web page to a printable document, you can use the Print button on every font page to print the Font specimen.

How many characters are included in the font?

Every font distributed by ToSupply embeds at least one of the 3 character sets: basic, standard or extended. Trial font includes A-Z plus figures and some punctiation. In some cases, Prototype fonts are transmitted externally for testing purposes in order to get feedback. Those sets are fully detailed here.

Can I request additional glyphs in a font?

You can request more glyphs in the latin scripts if you require some. Font files will be updated as soon as possible, free of charge. Plus it will benefit every other owner of a license for the involved cuts ( a notification will be sent to the licensees ). Regarding non latin scripts, expanding the character set is also possible but it has to be reviewed. Please get in touch at info@t-o.supply.

Can I request additional cuts in a font family?

You can request more cuts in a font family if you require it, may it be a weight ( i.e. bold ), width ( i.e. condensed ), slope ( i.e. italic ) or else variation ( i.e. optical size, stroke, etc. ). If the planning allows it, the new cuts will be made available on the website. You won’t be charge for the development but you’ll need to purchase a license accordingly. Can I commission ToSupply to modify an existing typeface from the catalog?

You can request a quote for custom modifications on an exhisting typeface, like a letter customisation in a logo, some distinctives alternate glyphs for an identity or any technical modification ( custom opentype feature, context specific subsetting or metrics ). Can I commission ToSupply to create a custom typeface?

Yes. Custom tailored fonts can be developped upon request. A new type design project may start from scratch, from a specific reference or even from a technical constraint.
