History
Phalanx by Hans Möhring for Genzsch & Heyse Type Foundry ( c. 1930 )
ToParcel pays a tribute to the work of Hans Möhring, who designed Phalanx for the for Genzsch & Heyse Type Foundry ( c. 1930 ). Phalanx is a latin world standing for « the long bones of the fingers and toes », certainly to suggest the linear construction of the typeface accompanied by thickened terminals which mimics the finger’s shape. While referencing the structure of a classic geometric sans-serif, the letter-sphapes embed a disctintive caracter thanks to their unusual endings. These small serifs « parceled » on the stems’s endings connect them on the baseline and provide an overall sense of stability. The family renders into a modern and elegant geometric face with historic heritage. The vertical proportions have been compressed in order to make it more heterogenous for text setting and more suitable for graphic compositions. Small yet adaptable, the family is composed of three cuts ranging from book to medium. Designed between 2016–2018, first released in 2018.
