History

Catalogue of specimens of printing types by English and Scottish printers and founders ( 1665-1830 )

The primary reference point of ToBlend was a rudimentary sample found in the catalogue of specimens of printing types by English and Scottish printers and founders ( 1665-1830 ). As ToBlend stands for «to combine», the main goal of ToBlend was indeed to harmoniously merge two specific design features found in the specimen sample, namely the combination of a classic serif construction ( like in Fleischmann’s eponymous font, Fleischmann, 1739 ) with sharp, almost geometric terminals. After several rounds of experimentation, the design found a place of balance between a baroque construction of the letters and a cutting edge digital drawing approach, keeping room for some extravagant letter-shapes like the lower-case g. The family offers a versatile yet heterogeneous blend: from a light cut with typewriter roots to a sharp black providing maximum impact in large sizes, the family is completed with vivid italics which include varying angles. Designed between 2014–2016, first release in 2016.
