History
Adrien Rovero children playhouse ( Mille-formes/Centre Pompidou Museum )
ToPlay finds it’s origins in the primary shapes used for children’s games. The typeface was initially developed to accompany the kid’s playground designed by Adrien Rovero specially for the Mille-formes/Centre Pompidou Museum. Due to the wood structure of the cabin in which the letters had to be engraved, the letter-shapes were subject to production constraints, namely round cups at stroke’s end. Moreover, since the train was one of the main game of the in play, a second restriction became that the letter path should be runnable by a locomotive. The typeface was drawn with a systemic approach of combining basic segments of paths on a strict grid, resulting in a playful yet legible display face. Intended for variable format in future developments, the font is designed as a single path later enriched by different stroke weights throughout the cuts. A titling cut built with two parallel paths completes the family and strengthens even more the visual link to the railways. Designed in 2021, first released in 2021.
